Te mapa
Syros sits near the centre of the Cyclades and serves as the administrative capital of the island group. It is a compact, irregular island, with a rugged, sparsely settled north and a gentler south where most villages and roads are gathered. On a map almost everything seems to flow toward the eastern coast and the town of Ermoupoli.
Ermoupoli grew in the nineteenth century into one of the leading ports in Greece, and its neoclassical centre reflects that period, with Miaoulis Square and its large town hall at the heart. Above the town rise two hills, each crowned by a settlement: Ano Syros, a medieval Catholic quarter, and Vrontado with the Orthodox church of Anastasi.
Along the harbour the shipyard and quays give the waterfront an industrial edge unusual in the Cyclades. A Syros map poster shows the town's layered structure clearly: the tight, winding lanes of Ano Syros, the more regular streets of Ermoupoli below them and the small roads running out to beach villages such as Galissas, Finikas and Kini.
Ano Syros and Vrontado rise side by side above the harbour, each wrapped in its own dense knot of lanes and stairways.
The neoclassical town spreads between the hills and the sea, its more regular streets converging on Miaoulis Square and the waterfront.
Most of the island's roads are in the southern half, linking beach settlements on the west and south coasts in a compact, looping network.
