The town lies between Lake Trzesiecko to the east and Lake Wielimie to the north, so from above the streets fill a strip of dry land squeezed between two large, irregular shorelines. The town dates back to the early fourteenth century, founded in 1310 by a Pomeranian duke, and its centre still keeps the compact medieval layout around a market square.
