Te mapa
Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan and served as the island's capital for more than two centuries, until the late 1800s. The map shows that age. The old centre is a close web of lanes, alleys and small squares, many of them leading to temples, surrounded by later avenues and broad roundabouts laid out during the Japanese period.
To the west the city opens onto the Taiwan Strait through Anping, the harbour district where the Dutch East India Company built Fort Zeelandia in the 1620s. A canal links Anping with the centre, and beyond it the coast breaks into lagoons, sandbars, fish ponds and old salt fields, a flat, watery pattern very different from the tight old streets.
Fort Provintia, now known as Chihkan Tower, marks the site of another Dutch-era stronghold in the heart of the city. Tainan is also known across Taiwan for its food and its many temples. A Tainan map poster captures both halves of the place: the dense historic core and the pale, geometric pattern of water along the coast.
The Anping Canal runs almost straight from the harbour district toward the city centre, a clear line on the map linking the Dutch-era fort with the old town.
In the historic core, short, crooked lanes and small temple forecourts create a fine, dense texture that stands out against the broader grid of later roads.
Along the western coast, rectangular fish ponds and former salt pans form a tiled pattern of water, sharply geometric and characteristic of this part of Taiwan.
