Te mapa
Taiyuan lies in a basin on the Loess Plateau, with mountains to the east and west, and the Fen River running straight through it from north to south. The city follows the shape of the valley, so on the map it appears long and relatively narrow, with major roads running parallel to the river and bridges crossing it at regular intervals.
The riverbanks have been reshaped into a continuous park, and the Fen River now forms a wide green corridor through the heart of the city. The older centre lies on the east bank, while newer districts and university campuses have spread across the west bank and to the south. Straight avenues and broad crossings give the whole plan a steady, rectangular rhythm.
Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi province and has been an important city for more than two thousand years, known in earlier eras as Jinyang. To the south-west stands the Jinci Temple complex, one of the oldest surviving temple sites in China. A Taiyuan map poster shows the river, the valley and the steady grid in between.

Hills rising on both sides of the city, where the regular street grid gives way to open land and winding roads, framing the urban area within the valley.
A historic temple site at the foot of the western hills, where springs, old halls and gardens break the modern grid into smaller, irregular forms.
