Te mapa
Tallmadge, in north-eastern Ohio just outside Akron, has one of the most recognisable town plans in the state. At its heart is Tallmadge Circle, a round green from which roads radiate in several directions, like spokes. On a map this star-shaped core stands out immediately against the rectangular suburban street blocks that fill the rest of the city.
The town was laid out in the early 1800s by settlers from New England and named after Benjamin Tallmadge, an officer in the American Revolution. The white First Congregational Church, facing the circle, is a well-known historic landmark and one of the classic images of the Western Reserve.
A Tallmadge map poster is a natural piece of graphic design: a circle at the centre, straight roads streaming out of it, and the later neighbourhoods fitted between the spokes. In black and white, the geometry is clean and bold, and it makes an unusually strong composition for a relatively small city.
The round central green and the roads fanning out from it give the city a wheel-and-spoke plan, one of the most distinctive layouts in Ohio.
Several straight roads leave the circle at regular angles, dividing the city into wedge-shaped sections that later suburban streets gradually filled in.
The historic church on the circle recalls the town's New England founders, and its setting at the centre of the spokes anchors the entire plan.
