Tanout lies in the Zinder Region of Niger, north of the city of Zinder, in the Sahel belt where farmland gives way to drier, more open country. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets and compounds surrounded by wide, pale land, with tracks and roads leading out across it.
The layout reflects the environment. Houses and walled compounds are packed closely together, and streets form an irregular network in the older parts of town. Roads connect Tanout to Zinder in the south and lead further north toward the Aïr and Agadez, making the town a waypoint on long journeys across the region.
