Tasbuget lies just outside Kyzylorda, the regional capital in southern Kazakhstan, close to the Syr Darya river. The surrounding land is flat and dry, and the river is its lifeline. The map is organized around water: the broad curves of the river and the straight channels that carry irrigation water out to the fields.
The settlement is laid out in regular blocks of low houses, a grid common across Central Asia, with wide streets and generous plots. At its edges the grid meets the rectangular pattern of irrigated fields, and the two line up with each other. This gives the whole area an unusually orderly look from above.
The Kyzylorda region is Kazakhstan's main rice-growing area, and the canals and fields around the river are part of that system.
