Nukus is the capital of Karakalpakstan, the autonomous republic in western Uzbekistan. It sits near the Amu Darya, where the river's delta once fanned out toward the Aral Sea. The land around it is flat, crossed by irrigation channels and bordered by desert. The city's shape reflects that openness, with broad avenues, large blocks and plenty of space between buildings.
Most of Nukus was built in the Soviet period, and its plan shows it. Straight boulevards meet at right angles, and wide central squares were laid out for public buildings and gatherings. The Amu Darya runs to the west of the city, and its channels and old meanders show as soft curves beside the rigid street pattern.
The city is best known for the Savitsky Museum. It holds a large collection of Russian and Central Asian avant-garde art gathered in the Soviet era, much of it officially disapproved of at the time. The shrinking of the Aral Sea to the north has shaped the region's recent history. A Nukus map poster captures the city's strict geometry against the river and the open land.

The great Central Asian river passes west of the city. Its broad channel and old meanders form the main natural curves on an otherwise orderly map.
The museum in the city centre houses one of the region's most important collections of avant-garde art. It draws visitors from around the world to Nukus.

Koteā ko Nukus
Nukus is a destination for art lovers and home for many Karakalpaks who have since moved away. Its clean street plan and river setting make a restrained, architectural poster that suits a study, a studio or a hallway.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the city's name in Karakalpak or a significant date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, as $9 HD files or as a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
