Te mapa
Xiva, also written Khiva, lies in the Khorezm oasis of western Uzbekistan, on irrigated land near the lower course of the Amu Darya. At its centre is Itchan Kala, a walled inner town whose clay ramparts form a rectangle on the map. Inside is a dense network of narrow streets, mosques, madrasas and courtyards. The outer city, fields and canals spread around it.
In 1990 Itchan Kala became the first site in Uzbekistan on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its skyline is marked by the squat, tiled Kalta Minor minaret, which was never finished, and the tall Islam Khodja minaret. On a map, the gates of the inner town line up with streets leading out into Dishan Kala, the outer town that once had a wall of its own.
Beyond the walls, water defines the landscape. A network of irrigation canals runs through fields and villages, and the desert is never far away. A Xiva map poster shows a historic walled city with unusual clarity from above: a compact rectangle set within the looser pattern of the oasis around it.
The clay ramparts of the inner town form a clear rectangle on the map, with gates on each side and a dense network of lanes and courtyards inside.
Mosques, madrasas and minarets such as the Kalta Minor and Islam Khodja stand close together within the walls. They give the centre of the map a fine, intricate texture.
Irrigation canals thread through the fields around the city and draw thin, branching lines across the landscape of the Khorezm oasis.

Koteā ko Xiva
Xiva is one of the great destinations of the Silk Road, and those who have walked its walls rarely forget it. A map of the walled city and its oasis is a calm, precise reminder of that journey.
Add a title, subtitle and coordinates line, using Xiva or Khiva as you prefer, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the clay walls and the desert setting especially well.
