Te mapa
Daşoguz lies in the far north of Turkmenistan, in the irrigated lowlands of the lower Amu Darya, close to the border with Uzbekistan. The land around it is flat and divided by canals. From above, the city appears as a broad grid of wide streets and large blocks set within a patchwork of fields, a layout shaped largely in the Soviet period.
For much of the twentieth century the city was known as Tashauz. Farming here, especially cotton, depends on water drawn from the Amu Darya through a network of canals. These straight channels are among the most visible features on any map of the region. They cut across the landscape in long lines, framing the city on every side.
About 100 kilometres to the northwest lies Köneürgenç, site of the old capital of Khorezm and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Daşoguz map poster keeps its focus on the city itself: the regular street plan, the broad avenues and parks, and the canals and fields that make life possible in this dry corner of Central Asia.
Broad, straight avenues divide the city into large, regular blocks, a planned pattern that gives the poster a strong and spacious geometry.
Canals carrying water from the Amu Darya run through and around the city, drawing long, straight lines across the flat land around it.
Beyond the edge of the city, farm fields form a fine patchwork divided by channels and tracks, fading toward the desert beyond the oasis.
