Te mapa
Tepeapulco lies on the high plains of southeastern Hidalgo, northeast of Mexico City. From above you see a small historic grid gathered around a central plaza, with hills rising at the edge of town and dry farmland stretching away on the other sides. The municipality also includes Ciudad Sahagún, an industrial town founded in the twentieth century, a few kilometres away.
The town's most important monument is the sixteenth-century Franciscan convent of San Francisco. It is closely linked to the friar Bernardino de Sahagún, who began his early studies of Nahua culture here. The convent and its atrium form a large, distinctive block in the town centre, clearly visible on the map.
A Tepeapulco map poster captures the colonial layout that shapes towns across central Mexico: a plaza, a church and straight streets meeting at right angles. Here that grid sits against a hillside and open land. The print is small in scale but carries a long history in its lines.
The convent of San Francisco and its large atrium occupy a whole block in the centre, the single most important shape on the map.
Straight streets around the plaza form a compact rectangular pattern, the classic layout of a town founded in the sixteenth century.
Hills rise at the town's edge while open agricultural land stretches the other way, framing the grid on two very different sides.
