Te mapa
Ojo de Agua lies in the municipality of Tecámac, in the State of Mexico, on the northern side of the Valley of Mexico. Much of the area grew quickly from large housing developments, and the map shows it clearly: long, curving avenues enclosing neighbourhoods of small, repeated blocks, each with its own internal pattern of closes and short streets. The land is flat, so the street design is the whole story.
The Mexico–Pachuca highway runs nearby, a major corridor linking the area to the capital in the south and to Hidalgo in the north. Between the developments, open ground and older village streets still appear, giving the map a patchwork quality. The contrast between orderly housing estates and the irregular lanes of older settlements is one of its most interesting features.
The name means eye of water, a Spanish term for a spring, and it recalls a time when the area was defined by its water sources rather than by housing. Today it is one of the larger communities in the State of Mexico. An Ojo de Agua map poster reveals the repeated geometry of a new kind of city, seen from above.
Large developments repeat the same small blocks and closes again and again, forming intricate textures that look almost like woven fabric on the poster.
The Mexico–Pachuca highway runs past the area as a strong, straight line tying these northern suburbs to Mexico City and to Hidalgo.
Between the planned estates, irregular streets of older settlements survive, breaking the repetition with a looser, more organic pattern on the map.
