Te mapa
Ecatepec de Morelos lies just north of Mexico City, and its map shows one of the most densely built municipalities in the metropolitan area. Much of it stands on land that was once part of Lake Texcoco, drained over the centuries. The flat former lakebed is now covered with tightly packed residential blocks in long, regular rows.
To the west the Sierra de Guadalupe rises abruptly. Streets climb its lower slopes, then give way to a protected area of open hillside. The Gran Canal del Desagüe, built to carry water out of the Valley of Mexico, runs through the flat eastern side and draws a long straight line across the grid. Major highways toward Pachuca cross the municipality from north to south.
The name comes from Nahuatl and is usually translated as hill of the wind, a reference to the Sierra behind the town. An Ecatepec de Morelos map poster shows how the city filled the valley floor. It also shows the contrast between flat lakebed and steep hillside, and the countless small blocks where more than a million people live.
Hills to the west interrupt the dense grid with open, rising ground. The streets thin out as they climb, giving the map a strong natural edge.
The historic drainage canal crosses the municipality in a long, straight line. Against the small residential blocks around it, it is one of the clearest features on the map.
The eastern part of Ecatepec occupies land that was once Lake Texcoco. It is now filled with compact, repetitive blocks that give the poster a fine, even texture.
