Te mapa
Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, occupies a long valley in the western Himalayas at more than 2,200 metres above sea level. The Wang Chhu river runs down the valley floor from north to south. The city stretches along its western bank and up the slopes, so the map is tall and narrow, with streets climbing the hillside in switchbacks.
It is a small capital by global standards, and an unusual one. Thimphu famously has no traffic lights, and a police officer directs vehicles at the main intersection from a decorated booth. North of the centre stands Tashichho Dzong, the fortress-monastery that houses the government and the central monastic body. On a ridge to the south, a giant seated Buddha statue overlooks the valley.
A Thimphu map poster sets the valley in clear outline: the river, its bridges, the compact centre and the empty space of the mountains on both sides. It is a meaningful piece for anyone who has lived, worked or travelled in Bhutan, and for those who simply appreciate how a city adapts to steep terrain.
The river runs the full length of the valley. It is the single dominant line that organises the whole city, and several bridges cross it.
North of the centre, the dzong sits beside the river within its own grounds, visible on the map as a quiet open area among the streets.
Streets on the valley slopes zigzag uphill, turning the edges of the map into a pattern of tight bends that contrasts with the flat valley floor.

Koteā ko Thimphu
Bhutan leaves a strong impression on the few who travel there and a deep attachment in those who call it home. A map of Thimphu's valley is a restrained way to hold on to that feeling, with the mountains present in the white space around the streets.
