Te mapa
Thomasville lies in south-west Georgia, close to the Florida line, and its map shows a town built in stages. At the centre is a compact grid of brick commercial blocks around the courthouse. Beyond it, tree-lined residential streets hold many of the large Victorian houses that went up when the town was a popular winter resort for wealthy Northern visitors in the late nineteenth century.
Many of those visitors bought land outside town and turned it into quail-hunting plantations. Their holdings still spread across the countryside, and they appear on the map as large, lightly marked spaces of pine woodland crossed by long private roads. Pebble Hill is the best known of them and is now open to the public.
Thomasville calls itself the City of Roses and has held a rose show every spring for more than a century. On Crawford Street, a live oak known as the Big Oak has spread its branches for centuries. A Thomasville map poster shows how that resort-era town plan meets the quiet plantation country around it.
The historic commercial district forms a tight grid of short blocks around the courthouse, the densest and most regular part of the map.
Residential streets around the centre are laid out on larger lots and follow gentler curves, reflecting the town's era as a winter resort.
South of town, large tracts of pine land with few roads open up the map, marking the historic quail plantations that still shape the region.
