Tonalá is a town on the Pacific side of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. It lies on the narrow coastal plain at the foot of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, which rises steeply just inland, while toward the sea the land flattens into lagoons, mangroves and the long, straight beaches of the Pacific shore.
The town itself is laid out in a largely regular grid, with the coastal highway passing through it on its way along the plain. Tonalá serves as the gateway to Puerto Arista, a beach settlement on the ocean nearby, and the road leading there forms one of the clearest lines on the map, running across flat land to the coast.
