Trípoli is the capital of Arcadia, on a high plateau in the centre of the Peloponnese roughly 650 metres above sea level. Mountains rise on several sides, including the Mainalo range to the north, and the city spreads across the flat basin between them. It is one of the few sizeable Greek cities far from the sea.
The city played a key role in the Greek War of Independence. In 1821 revolutionary forces led by Theodoros Kolokotronis besieged and captured it, a turning point in the early uprising. Today Trípoli is a regional centre, and its large central squares, such as Areos Square, remain the focus of civic life.
