Turiaçu Map Poster & Print
Turiaçu lies in northwestern Maranhão, on the river of the same name near where it reaches the Atlantic. The coastline here is low and broken into estuaries, channels and mangrove forest. The town is small, with a simple street pattern set on the higher ground beside the river, and the map around it is dominated by water.
It is one of the older settlements in this part of northern Brazil, and for a long time the river was its main connection to the rest of the region. The surrounding lowlands are shaped by tides and seasonal floods, and fishing and small-scale farming remain important locally.
