Te mapa
Udhampur sits in the foothills of the Himalaya in Jammu and Kashmir, in a valley surrounded by the ridges of the Shivalik range. On a map the town lies on a gently sloping basin. Streets climb the surrounding hills, and the Devika stream, which is regarded as sacred locally, runs through the town.
The town has long been a gateway to the Kashmir Valley. The Jammu–Srinagar national highway passes through it, and Udhampur station is on the railway that now continues north through tunnels and across bridges towards Srinagar. The Northern Command of the Indian Army has its headquarters here, and military areas take up large, clearly defined blocks.
An Udhampur map poster captures a town shaped by terrain and routes. The hills limit where it can spread, the highway and railway bend to fit the valley, and neighbourhoods follow the contours. The result is a street plan that is compact and practical, with real depth.
The Devika flows through Udhampur and has religious significance for many local residents. On the map it forms a thin, irregular line through the built-up area.
The Jammu–Srinagar highway and the railway both run through the town before climbing into the mountains. Their curving lines give the map a clear sense of direction.
Army areas, including the Northern Command headquarters, appear as large, orderly blocks with their own road layouts. They contrast with the denser civilian streets.
