Te mapa
Uekimachi-mōno is in the Ueki area, the former town of Ueki that was merged into Kumamoto City and now forms part of its Kita ward. It lies north of the city centre, where the dense urban grid gives way to farmland and low hills. On a map it looks quite different from central Kumamoto: loose clusters of houses, winding local roads and wide areas of cultivated land.
The street network here is mostly rural. Narrow roads follow field boundaries and the gentle folds of the land, while a few major routes and a rail line pass through on their way north from the city. The result is an open, finely drawn map, with small concentrations of buildings between larger stretches of empty space.
The Ueki area is known in Japan for watermelons, and it includes Tabaruzaka, the site of a major battle of the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877. An Uekimachi-mōno map poster shows the quieter, agricultural side of Kumamoto, a pattern of small roads and fields at the city's edge.
Local roads follow the shape of farm plots and gentle slopes, giving the map an irregular, hand-drawn network rather than a city grid.
Houses gather in small groups along the roads, so the print reads as scattered patches of detail across open agricultural land.
Main roads and a railway cross the area on their way north from Kumamoto, adding a few long continuous lines to the composition.
