Te mapa
Uelzen lies on the eastern edge of the Lüneburg Heath, where the Ilmenau river winds north through town on its way toward the Elbe. From above, the historic centre is a tight oval of streets. Roads spread out from it in several directions and pass through later residential districts before running into farmland and heath.
East of the town runs the Elbe Lateral Canal. Its straight line contrasts sharply with the meandering Ilmenau, and the Uelzen locks are one of the larger engineering features on the waterway. Railway lines meet at the station, which was redesigned by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser for the Expo 2000 year and is now the town's best-known building.
A Uelzen map poster shows all these layers at once: the curving river, the canal ruled like a pencil line, the rail tracks converging on the station, and the older street pattern at the centre. In monochrome, the difference between the natural river and the engineered canal is especially clear.
The Ilmenau loops through the town from south to north, and its soft curves thread between neighbourhoods and green strips on the way to the Elbe.
The canal passes east of the town in a long, straight line. The Uelzen lock site appears as a sharp, deliberate break in the rural landscape.
The railway station, remodelled by Hundertwasser around 2000, is where several rail lines meet. On the poster, the tracks converge on it like spokes.

Koteā ko Uelzen
Uelzen is a place people pass through by train and remember, and a home that people from the Heath return to. The map suits a hallway or a study, and it makes a considered gift for someone who grew up between the river and the canal.
