Valente is in the semi-arid interior of Bahia, in north-east Brazil. On a map, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by wide, lightly settled land. Dirt and paved roads run outward to farms and nearby communities, and the dry climate leaves the landscape largely open around the built-up core.
The municipality is closely linked with sisal, the hardy fibre plant grown across this part of the Bahian sertão. Cooperatives in the area have become known for their work on sisal production and rural development.
