Vargem Alta lies in the mountainous south of Espírito Santo, inland from the coast, in a region of steep hills, small valleys and farmland. The name means high meadow. The town fits into the terrain rather than overriding it: streets follow valley floors and ridgelines, and the built-up area stretches out along the lower ground.
The surrounding countryside is agricultural and hilly, with small rural properties, winding roads and pockets of forest. On a map this gives the town an irregular outline, with roads snaking away along the contours toward rural communities and nearby municipalities.
