Versailles is one of the most deliberately designed places in Europe, and its map shows this at once. Three broad avenues, the Avenue de Paris flanked by the Avenues de Saint-Cloud and de Sceaux, converge on the Place d'Armes in front of the palace. This goose-foot pattern later influenced city plans from Washington to Saint Petersburg.
West of the palace, André Le Nôtre's gardens unfold in geometric parterres, radiating paths and bosquets, leading to the cross-shaped Grand Canal. On a Versailles map poster, this formal landscape reads like an engraving. Straight axes, symmetrical basins and the wooded park of the Trianons to the northwest stand against the town's regular street blocks.
Louis XIV moved the royal court here in 1682, and the town grew around it in planned quarters, including Notre-Dame to the north and Saint-Louis to the south. In 1919 the Treaty of Versailles was signed in the palace's Hall of Mirrors. Today the town is part of the Paris region, a short train ride from the capital.
Three wide avenues converge on the Place d'Armes, forming a patte d'oie that became a model for Baroque urban design and gives the poster its unmistakable focal point.
The cross-shaped canal extends west from the gardens for well over a kilometre, a long pale line flanked by trees that anchors the whole composition.
The Notre-Dame and Saint-Louis quarters, laid out on regular blocks on either side of the palace axis, show early planned town building with rare clarity.

Versailles appeals to history lovers, garden designers and anyone who has walked its avenues on a visit or lived among its quiet streets. The symmetry of the plan makes a striking, balanced poster for a study, hallway or living room.
