Vigevano lies in the Lomellina plain of Lombardy, southwest of Milan, on a terrace above the Ticino River. From above, the historic centre is a compact knot of streets. At its heart is an unusually regular open rectangle, the Piazza Ducale, and the bulk of the Sforza castle sits right beside it. Around this core the town spreads into a looser pattern of residential streets, rail lines and rice-growing countryside.
The square was laid out in the 1490s under Ludovico Sforza. It is lined with continuous arcades on three sides and closed by the curved façade of the cathedral, and it is often counted among the finest Renaissance piazzas in Italy. In more recent history Vigevano became known for its shoe industry, and the town remains closely linked to footwear and the machinery used to make it.
A Vigevano map poster shows the contrast between that single planned space and the organic streets around it. The piazza appears as a crisp, empty rectangle surrounded by dense blocks, and the castle complex reads as a large, solid mass next to it. To the east, the Ticino and its protected woodland add a softer, wandering edge that frames the whole town.

The castle complex sits right beside the square and covers a large footprint of courtyards and wings. It forms the heaviest built mass anywhere in the centre.
East of town the Ticino River winds through a broad band of protected woodland and gravel channels. It gives the poster a loose, natural border.

Vigevano suits a wall because its plan is so easy to read: one perfect square, a castle, and a river valley at the edge. Architecture lovers will recognise the piazza at once, and so will anyone who once lived there.
