Te mapa
Villamontes sits where the last ridges of the Andean foothills give way to the flat, dry Gran Chaco. The Pilcomayo River passes the town as it leaves a mountain gorge and spreads out across the lowlands. On the map, the town looks like a compact grid on flat ground, with the river and hills on one side and open plain on the other.
The area has an important place in Bolivian history. It was a key site during the Chaco War of the 1930s between Bolivia and Paraguay. Today, Villamontes is known for the fishing on the Pilcomayo and for the heat of the Chaco lowlands, among the hottest places in the country.
A Villamontes map poster centres on the regular blocks of the town. They sit on the flat ground where streets could be laid out straight. The river brings the only strong curve into the composition. Around it, roads head out across the Chaco in long straight lines that fade toward the edges.
The river passes close to town as it leaves the foothills. Its broad, braided course is the most striking natural feature on the map.
The urban blocks are laid out in a regular pattern on level ground. The result is a tidy, easily read centre.
To one side, the land rises into the first ridges of the Andes. The road network thins there, which marks the change from mountain to plain.

Koteā ko Villamontes
Villamontes marks a border between two very different landscapes. For people with family there, or travellers who crossed the Chaco, the map records a specific meeting point of river, mountains and plain.
Add your own title and subtitle and set the coordinates line. Sand matches the warm, dry country. Classic black & white or Noir give the river line a sharper graphic presence.
