Villeparisis lies in Seine-et-Marne, at the edge of the Paris region where suburbs begin to meet farmland. From above, the town is a patchwork of residential blocks, many laid out as individual houses on curving streets and cul-de-sacs, with larger estates and green spaces in between. The railway runs across it, carrying RER trains toward the capital.
The Canal de l'Ourcq, built in the early nineteenth century to bring water to Paris, crosses the town's territory, and its towpath forms a long, straight line through the map. The name may be familiar to readers of Proust, who gave it to Madame de Villeparisis, one of the aristocratic figures of In Search of Lost Time.
A Villeparisis map poster reveals the texture of a Paris suburb in detail: the finely divided plots, the few main roads that carry traffic through, the canal's calm line and the open fields not far beyond. It is an orderly composition that suits a town made mostly of homes, gardens and the everyday geography of commuting.
The canal cuts a long, nearly straight line across the landscape, a nineteenth-century waterway whose towpath now serves walkers and cyclists heading toward Paris.
The RER line crosses the town, and the station area forms one of the clearer focal points in an otherwise evenly spread residential network.
Much of the map is made of small, closely packed parcels along quiet streets, giving the print a fine, even grain typical of the outer Paris suburbs.
