Villupuram lies on the plains of northern Tamil Nadu, inland from Puducherry and about halfway between Chennai and Tiruchirappalli. It is best known as a railway junction, where lines from several directions meet. On the map, the tracks converge on the town from different angles and give it a clear, star-like structure.
