Vĩnh Châu lies on the sea coast at the southern edge of the Mekong Delta, in an area formerly part of Sóc Trăng province and now administered within Can Tho City. The land is almost perfectly flat, and from above it reads as a patchwork of rectangular plots, ponds and straight canals, with a few roads connecting the town to the shore.
The area is known across Vietnam for its shallots, grown on sandy ridges near the coast, and for aquaculture ponds that fill much of the surrounding land. A large part of the population is Khmer, and Khmer Theravada pagodas appear among the villages around the town, alongside long-established Vietnamese and Chinese communities.
