Sóc Trăng lies in the lower Mekong Delta, in flat country where the land is cut by rivers, canals and irrigation channels. The Maspero River winds through the centre, and the town's streets form a moderate grid along and across it. Beyond the built-up area the map quickly turns into long, straight field boundaries and water lines running toward the coast.
The town has one of the largest Khmer communities in Vietnam, and its pagodas are among the best known in the delta. Chùa Dơi, the Bat Pagoda, is named for the fruit bats that roost in its trees, while the Clay Pagoda, Chùa Đất Sét, is filled with figures sculpted from clay. Their grounds form distinctive green spaces on the map.
Each year Sóc Trăng hosts the Ok Om Bok festival, when long, narrow ngo boats race on the Maspero. Administratively the former province has recently been folded into the wider Cần Thơ area, but the town keeps its own character.
