Viry-Châtillon is in Essonne, south of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine near where the Orge flows into it. The most striking feature of the map is water. Along with the river, a chain of large lakes lies within the town, and they form broad, smooth shapes among the residential streets.
In 1909, Port-Aviation opened here. It is considered one of the world's first organised aerodromes, and pioneering pilots flew there in the early years of aviation. Today the site is covered by housing, but it is still part of the town's identity. The rest of Viry-Châtillon is a mix of detached houses, apartment blocks and green spaces.
