Te mapa
Voorburg borders The Hague to the east and forms part of the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg. On the map it merges almost seamlessly with its larger neighbour, but it has its own clear pattern: a historic core, orderly residential streets, and green strips that follow the water. Railway lines and a motorway cross the town as firm straight lines.
The Vliet sets the town's direction. This old canal, linking Leiden and Delft, runs past Voorburg in a long line, with country estates and gardens once built along its banks. Smaller canals and ditches break the neighbourhoods into blocks, a very Dutch arrangement of land, water and path.
Voorburg is often described as one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands, because the Roman settlement Forum Hadriani lay here. Much later, the Huygens family kept the Hofwijck estate beside the Vliet, where the scientist Christiaan Huygens spent his last years. A Voorburg map poster brings those long histories into one tidy grid.
The historic canal runs past the town in a steady line between Leiden and Delft, and many of Voorburg's older estates and paths face toward it.
The Huygens family's country house sits beside the Vliet, its small, symmetrical garden and surrounding water visible as a neat geometric shape on the map.
On the west side, Voorburg's streets flow directly into The Hague, and the shift from one street pattern to the other is subtle but readable from above.
