Walsrode is in the Heidekreis district of Lower Saxony, on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath. The small river Böhme winds through the town, and the oldest streets sit close to its banks. From above, the centre is a tight knot of lanes around the church and the abbey. Further out it loosens into residential streets, allotments and patches of pine and heath.
Kloster Walsrode, a convent founded in the late tenth century, is one of the oldest religious foundations in the region, and it still anchors the historic core. Abbey quarter
The grounds of Kloster Walsrode, a convent that dates back to the tenth century, form a compact enclosure in the old centre. The short, irregular streets of the original town surround it.
