Warminster lies in west Wiltshire, where the chalk escarpment of Salisbury Plain drops toward the clay vale of the Wylye and Frome country. On the map, an old market-town core stretches along the main street. Twentieth-century housing surrounds it, and open downland rises sharply to the east and north.
The small River Were flows through the town, and the railway and bypass curve around its southern and western edges. To the west, Cley Hill, a rounded chalk outlier, stands on its own above the fields. Large areas of the surrounding plain are used for military training, so the map stays open and nearly empty on that side.
Warminster has long connections to the Army and is home to the Land Warfare Centre. In the 1960s, the town was widely known for reported UFO sightings over Cradle Hill. A Warminster map poster shows the town at the meeting point of the vale and the downs.
