Te mapa
Wayne is a community on Philadelphia's Main Line, spread across parts of Radnor, Tredyffrin and Easttown townships. On a map it is organised by two long parallel lines running east to west: Lancaster Avenue, the old turnpike, and the railroad that gave the Main Line its name.
Wayne was developed in the late nineteenth century as one of the earliest planned commuter suburbs in the United States, promoted by the publisher George W. Childs and banker Anthony J. Drexel. Its station still anchors the small downtown, where shops cluster along a short section of Lancaster Avenue.
A Wayne map poster captures the gentle rhythm of this suburban plan: tree-lined residential streets curving across the hills, generous lots, and the straight lines of road and rail tying everything together. Valley Forge lies a short distance to the north-west, a reminder of the area's deeper past.
The rail line runs straight through Wayne, with the station at the centre of town, defining its origins as a commuter suburb for Philadelphia.
The historic turnpike parallels the railway and forms the town's main street, lined with the shops and restaurants of downtown Wayne.
Away from the centre, streets bend over gentle hills and around large lots, giving the neighbourhoods a soft, irregular pattern.
