Te mapa
Weirton occupies a very thin part of the United States. West Virginia's northern panhandle is only a few miles wide here, and the city stretches across it, with the Ohio River and the state of Ohio to the west and Pennsylvania to the east. Streets climb from the river flats into steep hills and narrow hollows.
The city grew around the steel works founded by Ernest Weir in the early twentieth century, and it took his name. On a map the industrial land along the river is easy to pick out as broad, flat parcels. Residential streets curve over the hills behind them, following ridgelines and valleys instead of a single grid.
A Weirton map poster shows both of these characters: the long, straight riverfront and the looping residential streets on the high ground. The Ohio River forms a strong edge on one side of the frame, and the uneven terrain fills the rest with irregular lines. It is a print about a place defined by its river, its industry and its hills.
The river runs along the western side of the city and forms the state line with Ohio. Road and rail corridors follow the flat ground beside it.
Large industrial parcels on the river flats reflect Weirton's steel history. Their broad, simple shapes contrast with the dense residential streets higher up.
Away from the river, streets wind through hollows and over ridges. Their curving routes create an irregular, hand-drawn quality across most of the map.
