Wenago is in the Gedeo area of southern Ethiopia, in the highlands between the towns of Dilla and Yirgacheffe. This is well-known coffee country. The Yirgacheffe name is famous among coffee drinkers, and the surrounding hills are covered with smallholder farms where coffee grows under a canopy of taller trees.
That way of farming, a layered landscape of trees, enset and coffee, is known as the Gedeo cultural landscape and has been recognised by UNESCO. From above, the land looks green and continuous. Paths and small roads wind across the slopes, and houses sit scattered among the trees instead of in dense blocks.
The town itself gathers along the main road that runs through the highlands, with smaller lanes branching off it. A Wenago map poster shows that road, the local lanes and the quiet order of a coffee-growing town.
