West Coon Rapids lies in the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities, in Anoka County, Minnesota. From above, it is a typical postwar suburban landscape: curving streets and cul-de-sacs, arterial roads on a wider grid, and schools and parks placed between neighbourhoods. The Mississippi River runs not far to the south and west, and creek corridors cut green lines through the area.
The area grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century as families moved out from Minneapolis. Its layout reflects that period, with low-density housing, shopping centres along main roads and plenty of open space. Lakes, wetlands and wooded strips are scattered throughout, as in much of this part of Minnesota.
