Te mapa
West Des Moines grew westward from Des Moines, and the map shows that growth in layers. In the east, near the Raccoon River, older streets form a regular grid. Further west, newer neighbourhoods have curving roads and cul-de-sacs, with large commercial areas along the interstate.
The Raccoon River runs along the southern part of the city, with parks and green space on its floodplain. Interstate 35 and Interstate 80 run nearby, and their interchanges and wide curves stand out clearly against the smaller residential streets.
The historic core, known as Valley Junction, grew around the railroad and still has a main street of older brick buildings. In the west, Jordan Creek Town Center is a large shopping area. A West Des Moines map poster shows the whole development, from the railroad town to the newer suburban districts.
The historic railroad district keeps a compact grid of older streets, the oldest part of the city and the densest section of the map.
The river winds along the south side of the city, with parks and wooded floodplain forming a green, open band.
Newer neighbourhoods have curving streets and cul-de-sacs that contrast with the grid, showing how the city has expanded over time.
