Te mapa
West Warwick is a small town in central Rhode Island, shaped by the branches of the Pawtuxet River. On a map the river winds through the town from west to east, and the settlement is not one centre but a chain of former mill villages. These include Arctic, Phenix, Riverpoint, Crompton and Natick, each clustered around a crossing or a dam.
In the nineteenth century, textile mills along the Pawtuxet drew workers, many of them immigrants, into these villages. West Warwick split off from Warwick in 1913 to become a separate town, largely because of these mill communities. Today the river, old mill sites and the dense streets beside them are still clearly visible. Newer suburban streets fill the land between them.
A West Warwick map poster traces an industrial landscape: a river as the source of power, and villages growing up wherever the water could be used. The composition has a clear rhythm of clusters along a winding line. It suits families with mill-town roots, people who grew up in one of the villages and anyone interested in New England's industrial past.
The river's branches wind through the town. They are the thread linking the former mill villages that make up West Warwick.
Tight clusters of streets around former mill sites, such as Arctic and Phenix, still stand out from the looser suburban areas around them.
Bridges and dams mark the points where the villages first formed. They show where water power once shaped the town's growth.
