Te mapa
Wheeling lies in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, on the east bank of the Ohio River where Wheeling Creek flows in from the hills. The valley is narrow, and the city's map shows how closely the terrain holds it: downtown packed along the river, neighbourhoods stretched up and down the bank, and streets climbing into steep hillsides wherever the ground allows.
In the river lies Wheeling Island, a large residential island connected to downtown by the Wheeling Suspension Bridge. Completed in 1849, it was for a time the longest suspension bridge in the world and remains one of the oldest vehicular suspension bridges still in use in the United States. The National Road reached the Ohio here in 1818, bringing travellers west across the mountains.
Wheeling also holds a central place in state history: during the Civil War, the conventions that led to West Virginia's separation from Virginia met here. A Wheeling map poster shows the city's unusual geometry: the river and island in the middle, the long bridges, and the creek valleys branching into the hills. In black and white, the terrain-shaped plan reads with great clarity.
The island in the Ohio River carries its own grid of residential streets, set between two channels and forming a distinctive shape at the centre of the poster.
The 1849 suspension bridge links downtown to the island, one of several crossings that draw straight lines across the river on the finished map.
Wheeling Creek winds in from the east through a narrow valley, with streets following its course into the hills behind downtown.

Koteā ko Wheeling
People from Wheeling, and those with family roots in the Ohio Valley, hang this map as a picture of home, bridges and all. The river running through the middle gives it natural balance, and it looks just as good as a small print or a large 24×36″ poster.
Customise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a family name or a move-in date, and pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the $9 HD files in six sizes, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
