Te mapa
Windham, in eastern Connecticut, includes the city of Willimantic, and it is Willimantic's dense streets that dominate the map. The Willimantic River runs through the town and joins the Natchaug to form the Shetucket, so water shapes much of the plan, with roads and blocks bending to follow the riverbanks and valleys.
Willimantic grew as a mill city, known as the Thread City for its long association with thread manufacturing, and the large mill sites along the river still leave a strong mark on the street pattern. Around the centre, residential streets climb the surrounding slopes, and further out the town becomes more rural, with woods and scattered roads.
The town is also known for the Thread City Crossing, a bridge decorated with large frog sculptures on spools of thread, and for Eastern Connecticut State University. A Windham map poster brings together these layers: rivers, mill streets, hillside neighbourhoods and the quieter countryside that surrounds them.
The Willimantic and Natchaug rivers meet here to form the Shetucket, and their channels create strong curving lines through the heart of the town.
Along the Willimantic River, large mill sites and tightly packed streets recall the city's thread industry and give the centre its dense, linear shape.
The Thread City Crossing spans the river with its well-known frog sculptures, a local landmark that also marks a key link across the water.
