Wodzisław Śląski lies in the south of the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland, close to the Czech border. The town has a long history and was granted town rights in the Middle Ages. On the map the old centre is still clear: a market square with streets radiating out from it in a compact, rounded pattern.
Around that core, the town grew with the coal industry of the Rybnik region. Former mining districts, housing estates and industrial areas spread in several directions, and the town incorporated nearby settlements, so the map shows a mix of old village roads, planned estates and green spaces.
