Wurzen lies in Saxony on the Mulde River, east of Leipzig. The historic town sits on higher ground above the river, and on a map its old centre shows as a tight cluster of irregular streets around the cathedral and the market, with later districts spreading outwards in straighter blocks.
The river and its meadows run along the east of the town, a broad open band on the map. The railway between Leipzig and Dresden, one of the earliest long-distance lines in Germany, crosses the Mulde here, and its straight course cuts decisively through the landscape.
