Te mapa
Xiongzhou is the urban centre of Nanxiong, in the far north of Guangdong near the Jiangxi border. From above, it sits in a basin ringed by low hills, with a river running through and farmland spreading out from the edges of town. The older core has closely packed streets. Newer districts extend along the main roads with broader blocks.
Historically, this corner of Guangdong has been an important crossing point. The Meiling Pass to the north carried an old route between the Yangtze region and the south, and travellers came down through Nanxiong towards the Pearl River delta. Zhuji Lane, in the Nanxiong area, is remembered as the ancestral starting point for many Cantonese families.
A Xiongzhou map poster gives that long story a simple shape. The river, the compact old centre and the ring of hills all appear clearly in black and white. For families who trace their roots to this basin, the print is a way to keep the place of origin in view.
Low hills surround the town on several sides, and the built-up area fills the flatter ground between them. The result is an enclosed, well-defined outline.
A river crosses the urban area. Streets and bridges line up along it, and it divides the older quarters from the newer growth on the other side.
Roads head north towards the Meiling Pass, following the direction of the historic route that once linked central China with Guangdong.
