Yafran sits in the Nafusa Mountains of north-western Libya, on the edge of the escarpment that separates the high plateau from the Jafara plain below. On the map, the town is spread across the plateau rim, and the land drops sharply to the north. It is one of the historic Amazigh towns of the Nafusa Mountains, with a long tradition of settlement on these heights.
