Yan Besar lies on the coast of Kedah in northwest Peninsular Malaysia, the main town of Yan district. It sits in a narrow band of lowland between Gunung Jerai, the tall isolated mountain that dominates this stretch of coast, and the shallow waters of the Strait of Malacca. The surrounding landscape is agricultural, with rice paddies and village settlements covering the flat ground and small rivers flowing from the mountain to the sea.
