Yecapixtla is in the northeast of Morelos, on the southern slopes that fall away from Popocatépetl. The town's best-known landmark is the former Augustinian monastery of San Juan Bautista, built in the sixteenth century. It is one of the early monasteries on the slopes of the volcano listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The historic centre follows a typical colonial layout, with square blocks around the monastery and plaza. Outside that core, the pattern loosens as streets follow the slope and the older paths between fields. Yecapixtla is also known across Mexico for its cecina, salted dried beef, and visitors often come to the town for it.

Colonial grid
Square blocks spread from the plaza in a regular pattern. The grid is clearest in the historic centre, then gradually loosens toward the edges of town.
