Yelan’ is a district centre in the north of Volgograd Oblast, in southern Russia, set in open steppe and farmland. The map shows the kind of layout common to Russian provincial towns. Long straight streets are lined with low houses and garden plots, a central area holds public buildings, and a railway line passes by with its station.
A small river valley runs near the town, and its winding line and scattered ponds add softer shapes to an otherwise geometric plan. Beyond the last streets the land opens into wide rectangular fields. In black and white this makes a strong contrast between the settled grid and the empty space around it.
