Yixing sits in southern Jiangsu on the western side of Lake Tai, one of the largest freshwater lakes in China, and water dominates much of its map. The city centre lies between smaller lakes, and canals and streams cross the surrounding plain in a dense network, drawn as fine lines that link villages and fields.
To the south, the terrain changes. Hills rise, covered in forest and bamboo, and the roads thin out into winding routes toward tea-growing areas and scenic caves. The contrast between the flat, water-laced north and the green uplands of the south gives the map a clear sense of two landscapes.
